Three people arrested after car goes up in flames following Carlisle police pursuit

Two people are in custody after a wild police chase came to a fiery end in Perth’s southern suburbs.

A Mazda 6 burst into flames in the middle of Planet St in Carlisle not long after police say the car sped away from them about 11.10pm on Thursday.

It is understood damage to the car sustained during the pursuit sparked the blaze.

“The concern was that other cars would catch alight,” local Jan Schluter said.

“There were a couple of explosions.”

Authorities said three people fled the car inferno before they were tracked down.

Police Airwing used heat sensors to find two of them under another car.

“We’ve got a brand new helicopter with incredible capability, linking to police on the ground, and very quickly after the incident identifying where they were located and arresting them,” Police Minister Paul Papalia said on Friday.

A male and woman remain in custody and are assisting police.

The group were wanted by police investigating the theft of a handbag from a Stirling home about 3pm on Thursday.

Inside the bag was an Apple AirTag tracker that helped authorities locate the stolen item.

No charges have been laid.
