Shock as tiger shark swims up to shore at popular tourist beach

Shock as tiger shark swims up to shore at popular tourist beach

Beachgoers were in awe after a tiger shark broke the calm of a summer day as it sliced through the water in hot pursuit of a turtle lunch in Western Australia.

The action unfolded at Monkey Mia, a popular tourist destination and world heritage area more commonly associated with its wild dolphin experience.

“Didn’t expect this to happen,” Ruthy Roo, who shared the video on social media, said.

The “crazy” footage of the “stunning” tiger shark, which was captured 700km north of Perth, was posted on Facebook page Snorkelling WA before making its way to other platforms, including TikTok.

It shows the ocean predator gliding smoothly through the water, hunting the turtle as it raced towards the safety of the sand.

The shark appeared to momentarily get stuck on the shore before thrashing its tail and propelling itself back into deeper water.

“Wonder if the turtle got away. Incredible footage,” one person said.

Another person said: “That shark almost walked out of the water.”

UWA research fellow Oliver Jewell said turtles often use shallow areas to avoid sharks.

Great escape

“I think (the video) is a case of, the turtle knows the shark is after it, and it’s (turtle) going to (an area) as shallow as it can to escape it,” Jewell told 7NEWS.

“It seems to have worked.”

Jewell said tiger sharks, unlike hammerheads, wouldn’t traditionally come that close to the shoreline.

“Tiger sharks, they’ll come close, but I think that one cut it a bit finer than it meant to,” he said.
