Severe heatwave warning as temperatures set to hit 50C in Pilbara region

People in both Western Australia and South Australia are being warned of extreme weather conditions this weekend, with temperatures expected to soar to 50C.

Parts of WA, including the Pilbara region, are set to hit record temperatures, the Bureau of Meteorology has warned.

The heatwave is likely to affect towns including Laverton, Leinster, Leonora, Meekatharra, Newman, Paraburdoo, Wiluna and Warburton.

Weatherzone warned a mass of very hot air over the Pilbara has the potential to make the town “hotter than usual, even by the Pilbara’s standards”.

“Under certain circumstances, the Pilbara has the potential to produce some of the highest temperatures in the world and, unfortunately for locals, one of these extreme heat-inducing weather patterns could occur over the coming week,” it said.

The air mass could send temperatures in the region to beyond 50C over this weekend and early into next week, most likely sometime between Saturday and Tuesday.

Australia has only registered official temperatures above 50C on seven occasions.

The heatwave is also expected to move across WA and into SA over the weekend.

The BOM warns a “severe heatwave” could hit the North West Pastoral District in SA, with temperatures set to soar to the mid 40Cs from Friday.

“Severe heatwave conditions are expected to increase in extent and intensity over the weekend,” it said.

It urges people in heatwave-affected areas to:

Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre.Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of your home.If available, use fans or airconditioners to keep cool.
