A hotel guest has received a rude shock after being slapped with a surprise $1400 fee that sent her bank account into negative.
The woman had been staying at Novotel Perth Langley and was getting ready for the Ministry of Sound Concert at Kings Park last weekend when her hair dryer tripped the fire alarm, sending emergency crews to her room.
It was soon clear there was no actual emergency, and there was no issue when she checked out of the 4.5-star accommodation the following morning.

But a couple of days later she found $1400 had been charged to her account by the hotel, which had passed on the Department of Fire and Emergency Service’s (DFES) false fire alarm attendance fee.
“They sent no email, I called the hotel (and reception) said it was in their terms and conditions,” the guest told PerthNow.

“So if you’re at a buffet and the alarm goes off are they going to charge you for burning your toast?
“It’s disgusting and cowardly.”
With her bank account now overdrawn, the Novotel guest spent the day on the phone trying to recoup the money.
Adding to her frustration was the fact she was charged more than the standard DFES false fire alarm attendance fee — usually $1337.

The guest’s persistence eventually paid off when the money was refunded on Thursday.
A spokesperson for hotel group Accor, which owns Novotel, told 7NEWS.com.au the hotel’s general manager had contacted the guest personally and apologised for the issue.
“The general manager is following up on procedures internally,” they said.
The DFES levy was announced in 2015 because false emergencies were costing the department millions of dollars.
It is understood the department discourages hotels from passing on the fee to guests.
