Killer rapist Paul James Carr back in WA Police custody after manhunt

Killer rapist Paul James Carr back in WA Police custody after manhunt

A convicted rapist and killer who sparked an urgent search after cutting off his electronic ankle monitoring device is back in police custody.

Paul James Carr was released from prison in Western Australia on a supervision order in 2022 after having spent much of his adult life behind bars.

Detectives from the WA Police Serious Offender Management squad alleged the 55-year-old removed his ankle monitor before he was last seen in the Fremantle area on Wednesday afternoon, sparking a major search.

Police said Carr, deemed a high-risk serious offender, was taken into police custody in Claremont on Saturday afternoon.

Carr was convicted in 1987 of murdering his brother-in-law in NSW and served almost 20 years behind bars.

He was reimprisoned after being convicted of raping and bashing a 16-year-old woman in her regional WA home in 1987.

The charges came about after emerging technology was used to re-examine forensic evidence found at the crime scene.

A cold case review by WA detectives uncovered Carr’s DNA on the victim’s T-shirt and pillowcase.
