Green meteor lights up Perth, WA’s night sky

Green meteor lights up Perth, WA’s night sky

Western Australia’s night sky has been decorated in green as a meteor the size of a cricket ball flashed brightly across the state’s South West.

The striking fireball and its 200-kilometre-long tail was spotted about 8.50pm on Wednesday after entering the atmosphere over Pemberton, 300km south of Perth.

The spectacle, one of about three of its kind every year, only lasted about five seconds before the mix of iron, rock and ice dissolved over the Southern Ocean.

It is estimated to have been travelling up to 30km per second.

Experts said the bright light was triggered by the outer layer of the meteor melting under intense friction.

“Iron meteors give off that beautiful green glow,” Perth Observatory spokesperson Matt Woods told 7NEWS.

Social media went into overdrive with people who could hardly believe what they had witnessed.

“Did anyone just see a bright streak of light shooting from the sky? It was too bright to be a shooting star,” one person said online.

“It was massive and extremely bright.”

The observatory shared that the meteor had set off an avalanche of social media messages, emails and calls from people who had seen it.

“That was a bloody ripper of a meteor tonight,” it posted on Facebook.

While there were plenty of videos circulating online, one witness said you had to see it pulsing across the sky with your own eyes to truly have experienced its beauty.

“I will say it was way better in person. It looked almost rainbow-coloured. Just spectacular,” one person wrote.
