Family prepare tribute for Lancelin man Alistair ‘Sid’ McLean after fatal bike crash

Family prepare tribute for Lancelin man Alistair ‘Sid’ McLean after fatal bike crash

The wife of a beloved WA father killed in a cycling crash north of Perth is set to have her wish for a touching tribute realised thanks to a wave of generous community support for her late husband.

Lancelin local Alistair ‘Sid’ McLean was critically injured in a collision with a car during a morning ride on January 5 and died in hospital.

McLean, 51, was just days from setting off for an overseas holiday to Japan. Now his family are preparing to farewell the popular Department of Fisheries worker.

In a touching obituary from his wife Simone and two children, McLean was described as “one of the best”.

“He was a loving, adventurous, kind, generous and fun-loving bloke to all that knew him and met him. He had an impact on so many, being so involved with each community he lived in,” his family said.

“We were so blessed to have you as a wonderful husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew and friend and are forever grateful for all the adventures and laughs we shared.”

Loved ones said McLean “lived life to the full” and “your passion for food, fishing and footy was inspiring to us all”.

“You made our lives what they are today, and you will live on in your boys. We will cherish memories of you forever,” his family said.

“‘Team Mclean’ will not be the same without you, Sid. You will be forever in our hearts.”

McLean had spent the last decade in Lancelin but had lived in various towns around the state and beyond.

His death triggered an outpouring of grief from the countless community groups he had been dedicated to.

The Lancelin Ledge Point Pirates Football Club said McLean had been a “vital” volunteer who also pulled on the shirt as a “valuable” player.

“If he wasn’t coaching or playing, he had tongs in his hands cooking barbecues and was always the first to offer a hand to help,” the club said.

“Simone, Angus and Connor, we cannot begin to imagine the pain you are all feeling and wish to send our love and extend our support to you all in this extremely difficult time.

“There are no words to describe the impact that Sid had on many Pirate lives, no way for us to repay the countless hours of voluntary work he gave our club, but please know we are here for you all whenever you may need us.”

Quinns Districts Amateur Football Club and Gingin Football Club also took to social media to pay tribute to McLean.

Meanwhile, a fundraising campaign will help deliver a wish from McLean’s wife for a memorial bench in his honour.

Should it get the OK from the local shire, it will be placed in a location that overlooks the ocean, where McLean spent so much of his life.

Generous donors have poured in $16,000, with any extra money to be put towards the cost of his wake and a gathering to celebrate the opening of the tribute once it is built.

Family friend and fundraising leader Tina Broughton told 7NEWS.com.au it was unsurprising many had offered to help get the project off the ground, given McLean’s selfless service to the community.

“There’s been a huge outpouring of grief and loss,” she said.

Emergency services airlifted McLean to Royal Perth Hospital after he was allegedly hit by a Honda Jazz hatchback on Lancelin Rd, near the intersection of Old Ledge Point Rd.

He died in Royal Perth Hospital the following day.

The 29-year-old Honda driver, who was uninjured in the incident, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and will appear in Perth Magistrates Court on February 5.

McLean will be farewelled at a service in Gingin on January 25.
