Embleton couple fined after pet Japanese spitz suffers through debilitating mouth condition before death in Perth

Embleton couple fined after pet Japanese spitz suffers through debilitating mouth condition before death in Perth

Two pet owners in Perth’s northern suburbs have each been fined and banned over the horrific state of their dog, who eventually died on an operating table.

Japanese spitz Bei Bei was emaciated because a growth on his tongue had caused tissue to die, severely restricting his ability to eat, the Perth Magistrates Court was told on Friday.

A cruelty report had prompted an RSPCA inspector to visit an Embleton home in June where the elderly dog appeared sick and was frothing at the mouth, the animal group said.

His coat was also extremely dirty and the pet was found lying on a mouldy dog bed.

Bei Bei was eventually seized and taken to an emergency vet who noted “the dog’s tongue was immobile due to the mass and necrosis and that he was severely emaciated”.

While under general anaesthetic for further treatment at the RSPCA in Malaga the following day, Bei Bei stopped breathing and died.

“This was a lovely dog, relying on his owners to look after him in his old age,” RSPCA WA inspector manager Kylie Green said.

“To be left filthy, emaciated, in pain and unable to eat or even swallow his own saliva properly was cruel and I’m pleased the court has recognised that today.”

Bei Bei’s owners, a 55-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman were fined $2000 each under the animal welfare act.

They were also banned from owning an animal for six months.
