Carine Senior High School at centre of student stabbing emergency in Perth’s north

Carine Senior High School at centre of student stabbing emergency in Perth’s north

Two students are in hospital after an alleged stabbing at a school in Perth’s northern suburbs on Thursday morning.

Emergency services attended Carine Senior High School after a 16-year-old male student was injured by what police described as an “edged weapon” inside a classroom just after 10am.

The boy was taken to Royal Perth Hospital and a girl, 15, was transported to Perth Children’s Hospital.

Their injuries are not life-threatening.

“Both students are with police and currently receiving medical treatment,” authorities said.

In a statement, the boy’s family thanked first responders and said they were “shocked” to hear what had unfolded.

“At the minute, our main focus is our son and his recovery, both mentally and physically from this ordeal,” they said.

Inspector Jason Van Der Ende earlier said the case was complex, with plenty of witnesses to speak with, juveniles involved and “some other circumstances” that would be considered.

Police said there is currently “no threat” to the school or the wider community and the situation has been contained.

“It’s concerning. We don’t want this sort of behaviour in our schools,” Van Der Ende said.

“Schools should be somewhere that are safe and are there for our children to learn.”

Carine SHS principal Damian Shuttleworth informed parents about the “serious incident” involving two students in a letter.

“I want to reassure you that police attended, the situation was quickly contained, and there is no cause for ongoing concern,” he said.

“We have prioritised support for staff and students following this incident.”

A student at the school told 7NEWS about the angst felt among children.

“It’s a very nerve-racking experience because you don’t expect to come to school and hear about a stabbing,” they said.

WA Premier Roger Cook has also addressed the incident, saying his thoughts are with the school’s students and staff.

“This must have been a very distressing incident for the students that witnessed the incident and also the teachers who had to respond,” he said.

Carine SHS is an independent public school with 2400 students.
