A fishing trip has turned to tragedy after a man was killed in a boating accident off the coast of Alkimos in Perth’s north, police have confirmed.
An emergency rescue effort was triggered when another boat reported the overturned vessel 20km from shore about 11.45am on Friday.
Two of the boaties were able to be rescued but a third died before help arrived.

Yanchep Police Senior Sergeant Jamie Brennan said authorities are still working through how exactly the five-metre boat carrying the three friends capsized.
“Interim information received would indicate that the vessel was anchored, they came into some difficulty and shortly thereafter the vessel capsized,” he said.

The three men were in the water for about two hours before they were pulled from the water.
“I’ve spoken to (the survivors). They’re obviously shaken as one would expect, having lost one of their friends, however physically they appear to be ok,” Brennan said.

Brennan said there was a bit of swell out on the water Friday morning.
“The sea can be quite an unforgiving environment so you’ve always got to have your wits about you,” he said.
The boat was equipped with emergency equipment and an orange smoke flare was deployed.
The two rescued men were wearing life jackets although it is unclear if that was the case for the third man.
Marine Rescue Two Rocks have towed the vessel back to a boat ramp at Mindarie Marina.
The vessel, which sustained minor damage, will be seized by police as part of its investigation.

Ambulance crews from St John WA and police were also been stationed at the marina to check on the welfare of the survivors.
Police Air Wing, the RAC rescue chopper, Water Police, local police and DFES Marine Rescue Two Rocks were involved in the emergency response.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
